JAWS - see the world's most terrifying predators. Now open at Deep Sea World

What's New

DEADLY SPIDER ARRIVES AT DEEP SEA WORLD

A highly venomous species of tarantula from the tropical rainforests of Thailand is now on Display.

The cobalt blue tarantula can grow up to 15cms in length and has one of the strongest venoms of any tarantula.

The spider – which is also known for its rapid movement and aggressive behaviour – is the newest addition to the new JAWS feature which showcases the biting power of creatures from around the world.

This particular spider is often described as the most beautiful but also one of the most dangerous species of tarantula in the world. It gets its name from the iridescent blue markings on its legs which, when they catch the light, are really extraordinary.

Unlike ‘New World’ species of tarantula they do not have the ability to shed hairs which irritate would-be predators and therefore rely much more on a painful bite as a defence mechanism.

JAWS

Jaws highlights a variety of the planet’s most extraordinary creatures with some real bite.

Among the new arrivals are Godzilla, an alligator snapping turtle with the strongest recorded bite on the planet.

Snapping turtles are the largest freshwater turtles in the world and are reputed to live for
up to 150 years.

Other attractions include the bizarre-looking horned frog. Originally from Africa they have a huge mouth – capable of eating prey almost their own size - and are among the only frogs to have teeth.

There will also be a new display for the deadliest piranha species – the feared black piranha which has the potential to sever a
human hand in only 2 bites!

The goliath tiger fish, a giant freshwater species which can grow up to 1.3 metres in length and has razor-sharp teeth will also be found on display within JAWS.

This increadible fish is also known as the Devil fish and is one of the world's fastest freshwater fish!

GODZILLA THE ‘KILLER’ TURTLE GETS NEW HOME AT DEEP SEA WORLD

One of the world’s most dangerous turtle species has been re-homed at Deep Sea World after being abandoned by its owners.

The alligator snapping turtle, who’s been nicknamed Godzilla, was rescued by the animal charity Specialist Wildlife Services after apparently outgrowing its original home.

Godzilla, who measures approximately 18 inches is still a juvenile, but once fully grown could reach lengths of up to three feet and live to be 100.

At 1,000 lbs per square inch snapping turtles are believed to have the second strongest bite strength of any animal in the world after the crocodile and some experts believe they may be able to live for up to 150 years in the wild.

Described as ‘living dinosaurs’ because of their primitive appearance, legend has it that a 403-pound specimen was found in Kansas in 1937.
