Sharks are a prehistoric species from over 400 million years ago. As the apex predator, they’re at the top of the food chain and eat almost anything, although many feed mostly on smaller sea creatures. At Deep Sea World, we’re home to several shark species, including the lesser spotted catshark and sand tiger shark.
Whose job is it to clean up the ocean? The mer-maids!

Mullets are a family of fish whose name has nothing to do with the popular ‘80s hairdo. In reality, they’ve been around much longer – with research suggesting they’ve been swimming in our oceans for thousands of years!

Why did the lobster blush? Because the sea-weed!
Ready for a fun fact? Something you might not know is that European lobsters, like many other lobster species, are naturally more blue than red. The reason we associate red with lobster isn’t such a fun fact, though, since it’s because they turn red when they’re cooked. When they’re alive, their claws and whiskers are often pink.

Why did the coral reef laugh? Because it saw a clownfish!
Did you know that clownfish and coral have a special relationship? They protect themselves by living in anemones, which release a toxic substance from their tentacles when any other sea creature touches it. Clownfish have developed an immunity to these toxins since they have a layer of protective mucus covering their bodies. This means they can pass through the tentacles without injury, allowing them to protect themselves from other fish within these habitats. Pretty clever, huh!
