DEEP SEA WORLD ADDS WATER TO EARTH DAY
Deep Sea World, Scotland’s national aquarium, is joining groups and organisations around the world to celebrate Earth Day.
Now in its 46th year, Earth Day is an annual event, celebrated on April 22nd, on which activities are held around the world to demonstrate support for environmental protection.
It was first celebrated in 1970, and is now coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network, and celebrated in more than 193 countries each year.
Rather than limit their celebrations to the day itself, the North Queensferry wildlife attraction is planning 10 days of activities linked to conservation and the environment which will run from April 16th – 25th.
As part of the event there will be daily talks focussing on the dangers of pollution on the aquatic environment and ways we can all help to safeguard it for future generations.
There will also be a fun ‘Earth Day-themed’ trail around the aquarium for younger visitors with a selection of prizes to be won.
Deep Sea World’s Nancy Sidhu said: “The aquarium celebrates the beauty and variety of the aquatic world and we thought it would be great to join up with other groups and organisations across the globe to mark Earth Day.
“Sometimes the problems of pollution and the environment can seem overwhelming but this event is a fantastic way to demonstrate that millions of people acting locally around the world can have a significant positive effect.
“Hopefully it will also inspire younger people to get involved and find out more about what they can do to help,” she added.
Last year Deep Sea World introduced a new range of crockery with all meals now being served on palm leaf plates.
“The palm leaf plates are amazing; they’re compostable, completely biodegradable and apparently can even be fed to your pet giraffe!” said Nancy.
“Wholeleaf products are not picked from the tree but from the ground by workers, they have no pulp, starch or chemical ingredient, they are just a washed, pressed and heat treated leaf,” she added.
